Simple Decision Making Tool following the AHP Technique

In recent years, different objective methods are applied to identify the best option from the available set of alternative for solving a given decision making problem.Analytical Hierarchical Process or AHP is one of such method which is mostly applied in decision making problems where multiple criteria is considered before selecting the best solution among the available set of solutions. This tool will help to identify the best solution with the help of AHP method from a set of feasible solutions to solve the given decision making problem.

Suppose we want to select the best location for installation of a hydro power plant. Such kind of power plant require sufficient amount of flow at a regular frequency throughout the year. The interconnection length or the distance between the two banks of the river must also within the suitable limit.

So Amount and Frequency of Flow including the Interconnection Length of the available locations can be selected as the Criteria by which the available set of locations can be evaluated to identify the best location among them.

Let there are three available locations where a new hydro power plant can be installed and thus these three locations can be considered as Alternatives.

Simple decision Maker by AHP Method

1)Go to Assign Rank Tab

2)Under the Alternative Table write Location 1,2 and 3 as Name of Options/Alternatives/Solutions

3)Under the Criteria Table write Amount,Frequency of Flow and Interconnection Length as "NAME OF CRITERIA".

4) As described in the Home page,in the Criteria Column of the Alternative Table and in the Goal column in the Criteria Table write the complement of normalized rank of the alternatives with respect to criteria and criteria with respect to Goal respectively.

5)Here Location 1 has the maximum amount and frequency of flow but distance between the banks of the river is also maximum among the available three locations.

Location 2 has the second highest amount and frequency of flow but interconnection length is minimum and Location three has the lowest amount and frequency of flow compared to all the three locations but length of interconnection lies in between Location 1 and 2.That is why with respect to Amount and Frequency of Flow Location 1 was assigned a rank of 1 but as interconnection length is a non beneficiary parameter that means more the length lesser will be the feasibility of the location, rank for Interconnection length criteria was 3.

But for Location 2 rank for criteria Amount and frequency of flow was 2 respectively and for interconnection length criteria it was 1.

Rank for location 3 with respect to Amount and Frequency of Flow and Interconnection Length was 3,3 and 2 respectively.

6) As per the complement of normalization formula as given in the Home Tab, Rank one become 0.75 followed by 0.5 and 0.25 for Rank 2 and 3 respectively.

7)The importance for Amount and Frequency of Flow along with the Interconnection Length was assigned to be 1,2 and 3 respectively with respect to its significance on the decision goal of the problem.

8)These ranks were also complemented as per the complement to normalization formula given in the Home tab.

Happy taking decisions.
